Sustainability Update July 2024 - Paul Barrett

Sustainable Businesses in the Harbour

One of the areas of work and objects of the constitution for the LHBA is to encourage sustainable business practices. To this end the LHBA sustainability working group is focusing on a couple of areas:

1. The ongoing support of the Lyttelton Litter Hunts.

In conjunction with Project Lyttelton, the idea for the Litter Hunts originally started via a conversation with Duncan Wilcox from Project Lyttelton regarding the waste building up around the central Lyttelton business area and a plan was made to start the clean ups.

The cleans ups occur every couple of months, we meet in the carpark at the back of the supermarket and Lyttelton Coffee company. We have all of the tools for the work and the waste and recycling is collected and weighed. There are Garage sale vouchers available as prizes and it is always a fun and rewarding activity keeping Lyttelton looking loved.

The next event is on the 21 st of July 2024 10:00am – 12:30pm we hope to see you there

2. Recycling focus

Stephen Mateer (Lyttelton Coffee Company) and Duncan Wilcox (Project Lyttelton) are keen to see recycling bins on the main street of Lyttelton, to that end Paul Barrett (Sustainability By Design) and Duncan presented at the Banks Peninsular Community Board to ask for support and what the next steps are to make this happen watch this video of the June 10 th presentation.

3. We are having ongoing conversations with the Lincoln Envirotown trust about their Responsible Business Awards and are keen to learn from them and offer these in the future for Harbour businesses.

4. We are also actively looking for funding for the development of the Business Association any ideas gratefully received.
